The Evans Head Airpark Proposal

We propose to develop a multifaceted residential and commercial Airpark on the historically significant, State Heritage ListedEvans Head Memorial Aerodrome.  The township of Evans Head is unique amongst the coastal townships of East coast Australia by being in possession of this major and significant peice of infrastructure.

At present the aerodrome is supported by voluntary organisations and the local council, with very little income being derived for its own upkeep.  With the over-riding theme of self sufficiency, we believe the conversion to a medium sized airpark will not only conserve the aerodrome for continued use in general aviation, but will also bring substantial economic and lifestyle benefits to the local and greater community.

With the creation of a residential and commercial airpark, aviation related industries would be enticed to the area to start businesses and increase the number and range of employment opportunites.  With an aviation centre such as this, more job opportunities are open to  local youth, not only in aviation, apprenticeships, building etc, but also the tourism related industries associated.

With this in mind, we are also determined to keep and pay homage to the significance of the aerodromes military history. Both out of respect to the part the aerodrome played in World War II, but also out of respect to the relatives and friends of our men and women who worked and played there in times of war.  This is to be carried out with the creation of a military museum similar to Temora and Point Cook museums.  It would initially be built around the last surviving Belman Hangar, eventually leading to the creation of a very large scale museum with a strong RAAF theme in line with its heritage.  The Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome Committee and the local community would be consulted and invited to take an active role in the nature and operation of such a museum.

Our proposal incorporates the following key elements:

  1. Local commercial and recreational aerodrome
  2. Small scale commercial uses and community facilities associated with the aerodrome
  3. Military Aviation museum
  4. Residential airside precinct with direct access to flying facilities
  5. Aircraft maintenance and support hub
  6. Boutique motel and convention centre
  7. Establishment of wetland conservation area
  8. Camping facilities
  9. Standard residential release area

We believe a residential and commercial airpark facility such as we are proposing at Evans Head offers so much more than the usual property developments appearing ceaselessly up and down the east coast.  An Airpark with its aviation focus and historical significance is unique and attracts a more varied clientele that can only be of added value to the residents of the Richmond Valley.  This airpark will bring added prosperity and significance to the Evans Head area and distinguish it from the usual coastal town development.
